Saudi Arabia building economic and security ties in region

Saudi Arabia is expanding its influence in the region. It has already been instrumental in ousting the Muslim Brotherhood from power in Egypt and it is now inking arms deals, financial aid, and security arrangements. Riyadh wants to build its power and shore up support against Iran, Israel should be mindful of this as the Saudis will eventually use their power on it.

Haqqani Network founder dead

Jalaluddin Haqqani is said to have died a year ago. (Death notices seem to come late in that part of the world.) He was a mujahideen commander in the Russian-Afghan War and a key warlord after it. He brought al Qaeda into the Taliban war effort in the nineties. It isn’t clear how he died but he has been high on the US drone list for quite some time. Haqqani’s son, Sirajuddin Haqqani, has been the commander of the Network for many years, so no great change should be expected.
