Study finds radical Islam prevalent in Syrian rebel groups 

The Centre on Religion and Geopolitics finds that one-third of rebel groups share the ideological outlook of ISIL. And if ISIL were defeated, they would fill the void. This takes away from the idea of a moderate opposition in the rebels – a view long held here. This is not to say that all rebels are terrorists as Syria, Iran, and Russia assert, but they are not democratic or favorable to the US.

Afghan governor warns of collapse 

The governor of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan has called for more troops as the Taliban continue to press their offensive even after the fighting season ended last month. He is undoubtedly trying to get more resources but the threat is real. Several hundred ANA troops deserted recently and casualties have been high, There are reports that US special forces have been engaged in the Helmand fight and the US may feel the need to send in more.

Turkey to withdraw troops from Kurdistan

The presence of Turkish troops in Kurdistan, a region still claimed by Iraq, set off protests inside Iraq and among allies in Iran and Russia. President Obama also called upon Turkey to withdraw the forces and Turkey has recently agreed. The withdrawal is not expected to be total. Some Turkish troops will remain.

Turkish offensive in Kurdish areas continues

The Turkish army claims to have killed over a hundred PKK fighters in the restive southeastern part of the country. The fighting will likely continue.
